Decision expected March 27 in Sinixt case

A decision in a landmark case involving the Sinixt First Nation will be delivered March 27.

The trial of Washington state resident Rick Desautel wrapped up this week in Nelson Provincial Court.

He went hunting on the Arrow Lakes in 2010 and was charged with two offences under the BC Wildlife Act.

But he argued that as a member of the Sinixt he has a constitutional right to hunt in his traditional territory.

The verdict is expected to address whether the Sinixt have standing in Canada.

They were declared legally extinct in this country in the 1950s but some members have since returned to the area and many others live in the US.

The trial took several weeks.
