Nelson CUPE workers vote to strike

Nelson’s CUPE 339 staff have voted overwhelmingly to strike.

The local represents 85 employees who work for the City of Nelson and the Nelson Youth Centre.

In a news release, the union said 95 per cent of those who cast ballots Monday voted in favour of job action if they are unable to reach a settlement. Their previous contract expired at the end of last year.

Youth Centre employees voted to join the union in July.

Local 339 president Mike Steffiuk says they believe the youth centre should be included in the same collective agreement.

Chief financial officer Colin McClure, who is part of the city’s bargaining team, says their position is it should be a standalone contract.

The parties have been at the bargaining table several times over the Youth Centre, trying to reach a mediated deal. However, the mediator could not bring them to an agreement.

Youth Centre staff oversee the skateboard park and city campground and also provide employment counselling and school outreach programs.

The union has submitted proposed dates for continued bargaining.
