Flooding possible as Kootenay Lake rises

The City of Nelson is warning that water levels on Kootenay Lake could soon match or exceed those of 2012.

That year saw Lakeside Park under water and even flooding on Baker Street following a big storm.

Fire chief Len MacCharles says they’re keeping a watchful eye and want residents to be prepared.

MacCharles says they’re monitoring the weather closely.

FortisBC says lake levels are expected to reach 1,752 feet by the end of the month.

In 2012 levels peaked at 1,753.87 feet and inundated Lakeside Park and the sports fields.

Public works crews are clearing debris away from creek grates to make sure they don’t become blocked.

Sandbags are available to anyone who needs them.
