Nelson moves on stricter smoking bylaws

Nelson city council has passed an updated Clean Air and Smoking Bylaw which effectively bans smoking in much of the downtown.

It will be prohibited at all outdoor public spaces including amenity areas and patios and within seven-meters of those spaces.

Publicly-used entrances to private buildings will also be off limits.

City Manager Kevin Cormack says there won’t be too many places left to smoke.

The stricter regulations are aimed at reducing the public’s exposure to second-hand smoke.
