Nelson’s stricter rules banning smoking within 7 meters of all entrance ways and publicly used areas seem to be having an impact.
Senior Bylaw Officer Fred Thompson notices far fewer cigarette butts on the street as he goes about his education efforts.
He says some people want to push it but it’s rare.
Thompson says it’s all about education and he never wants to ticket anyone.
The fine for a first offence is $75 although that is reduced to $50 if paid promptly.
