Nelson’s fire chief is dismayed at the findings of a recent audit of smoke alarm use in city homes.
Fire chief Len MacCharles says they knocked on 100 doors this fall and were invited inside 60 times.
But 20 places had no working smoke alarm.
MacCharles says it surprises him because smoke alarm use is one of the central messages they preach.
He says it’s also important the devices be on the same floor as where you sleep.
