Blewett fire agreement renewed, despite concerns
Firefighters respond to a trailer fire in Blewett in late December.
The regional director for Blewett says she felt pressured into renewing a fire protection agreement for part of the area.
Ramona Faust says it will see some residents pay the City of Nelson 21 per cent more over the next five years.
Faust wanted to sign a one-year deal instead of five years, but was told that couldn’t be done on the fly.
She reluctantly agreed to the deal anyway after being further told a delay could result in the area losing its fire protection.
The deal will cost $176,000 in the first year and increases to $192,000 in year five.
The additional cost is being chalked up to greater training and risk management requirements.
