Nelson City Council passes plan for Railtown after public hearing

Nelson City Council is moving ahead with plans that outline future development in Railtown.

It creates an extension of Baker Street into the area, with retail, residential, and industrial uses.

A public hearing on Monday brought out a crowd of residents and business owners both for and against the plans.

One concern was that some existing businesses would be converted into residential space.

Development Services Manager Pam Mierau clarified that wasn’t the case.

She says there seemed to be a miss in communication.

Council approved the proposed changes with one amendment after the public hearing.

Mayor Deb Kozak says they heard some concern about the wording for warehouses.

Councillor Anna Purcell voted against one of the zoning changes which she felt didn’t go far enough to prevent a larger ‘box store’ type business from opening.

Council approved two other developments at Monday’s meeting.

An affordable housing complex for seniors at 805 Nelson Avenue and five units of student housing in the old Sub Pub building at 711 Tenth Street.
