Council approves affordable housing development at 805 Nelson Ave.

The Nelson Cares Society received approval from City Council on Monday to go ahead with its plans for an affordable housing development at 805 Nelson Avenue.

A public hearing on the re-zoning proposal brough out a few residents from the neighbourhood who didn’t feel it was the right location.

Vivian Pasacreta  has lived in the area since 1972.

She feels at four stories the building will be too high for the area. Parking was also a concern.

The development would have been required to provide 59 stalls, but received a variance from Council to reduce that to 19.

Nelson Cares Executive Director Jenny Robinson feels 19 stalls is enough.

The development is $11.3-million with most of the funding from BC Housing, however Robinson says they may have to do some fundraising.

It will replace the existing 20 units of housing in a former motel with 47 new units for residents 55+.
