CBT announces funding for climate action projects

The Colmbia Basin Trust is helping communities adapt to climate change and reduce green house gas emissions. They announced a $540,000 investment to fund 12 projects across the basin. That includes two projects in the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

The RDCK received over $130,000 to acquire LiDAR data for 80,000 hectares which will help mitigate the risks of flood, landslides and wildfire. The project is part of a larger geohazard and flood risk assessment being conducted for the region that should be completed next March.

Over $30,000 also went to the RDCK’s Central Water Smart Ambassador Program which will help deliver water conservation programs and activities in a number of communities.

The CBT says this comes after one of the hottest, driest summers on record for the Basin and as global temperatures continue to increase, so do the risks of drought, wildfire and flooding.
