Updated: Downed lines cause power outage in Blewett and Taghum beach areas

Power has been restored to many homes in the area after a strong wind storm caused outages last night. Nelson Hydro Manager Alex Love says there were a few different outages.

As of noon today power was back on for most except some homes on Upper Granite Road, which took until later this afternoon to restore.  Love says Nelson’s main line was down for a number of hours today, but they were able to prevent a larger outage with help from Fortis BC.

There was also a significant outage on Easter Monday. Some residents in the North Shore were without power intermittently for eleven hours.  Line Manager Darrel Manchur says it was more complicated than usual to get power back on as Fortis’s supply line was down as well, but that wasn’t the only problem.

A release from Nelson Hydro says they’re currently doing an upgrade to the system on the North Shore. Right now they’re in the 14 Mile area and will continue westwards towards Nelson in the coming weeks.  The upgrade will help restore power faster and increase electrical capacity. It’s expected to finish at the end of May.

The City of Nelson issued a notice this morning after a power outage to Lower Granite Road, parts of Blewett, and the Taghum Beach area. The City says the cause is broken poles and wires down in multiple locations. Over 100 customers have been affected before  7:00am this morning. The estimated time of restoration is 3:00pm today. The City is reminding residents not to approach any downed lines.

You can call 1-8777-324-9376 for current power outage updates.
