Y2Y calls for moratorium on industrial activity to help south mountain caribou

Some conservationists are hoping to see an immediate moratorium on industrial activity in southern mountain caribou critical habitat. Candace Batycki with the Yukon to Yellowstone conservation initiative is calling the latest herd census that found only three females remaining “an emergency” and feels immediate action should be taken.

She says as caribou rely on lichen from old growth forests, their possible extinction it has bigger implications.

Batycki  says there also needs to be strong recovery planning and another part of the problem is that BC doesn’t have any species at risk legislation currently.
