Council set to approve 2018 budget on May 7

Council gave first three readings to the Five Year Financial Plan and Tax Rate Bylaw this week with final adoption expected May 7. The tax increase is 2.5 per cent or $42 a year for the average home in Nelson. McClure says that doesn’t include the taxation decrease from the RCDK.

School taxes are set by the province and make up 26% of the remaining 30%.

McClure says the Five Year Financial Plan included moving the bus exchange from its current location on Ward Street, but there’s been a delay with that until at least 2023. He says BC Transit funding allocation methods have changed and there’s a moratorium on any new projects.

He says Victoria Street was a possibility for a new location.

BC Transit will be conducting a review in the area in mid to late summer to look at ridership numbers, the bus fleet, and routes.
