Council passes Five Year Financial Plan

Nelson City Council adopted its Five Year Financial Plan at last night’s regular meeting. That includes the tax rate increase of 2.5 per cent. A reduction in the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s taxation will offset that to 1.5 per cent – the reduction is a result of grant money that covered upgrades at the Nelson and District Community Complex.

Councillor Valerie Warmington is pleased with the smaller impact on home owners this year.

The City of Nelson’s Chief Financial Officer, Colin McClure, says there’s also been a change to the school tax. He says it’s gone down after the Province realized there was an administrative error.

He says it went down from about an $82 increase to $21.

The City’s tax increase is about $40 for the average home in Nelson.
