Public hearing set for new laneway housing regulations

New regulations for laneway housing in Nelson are moving ahead. City Council gave first reading to a number of Bylaw amendments this week. Alex Thumm with the City of Nelson’s Development Services says one of the zoning amendments allows for larger laneway houses.

Thumm says other regulations deal with how many off-street parking spaces would be required.

The City is trying to make regulations more flexible in hopes of adding more housing in the community. Thumm says there’s already been some interest.

Three of the amendments will go to a public hearing next month, including those to the Zoning Bylaw.

Thumm says height restrictions on laneway housing haven’t been increased yet, however, he is working on design guidelines to help reduce neighbour impact.
