Let’s Talk Chronic Pain

Two free events on how to manage chronic pain are happening in Nelson and Warfield this week. They’re presented by the Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice.

Dr. Joel Kailia in Nelson explains what attendees can learn. “We want to give people an idea of the options they have available to treat their chronic pain without the use of medication and what the resources are available in the local community.”

He says it’s an interdisciplinary event for anyone interested. Those supporting someone with chronic pain are welcome as well. They’ll hear from doctors and affiliated healthcare workers on different aspects of chronic pain.

Chronic pain affects one in five people across the province according to Dr. Kailia, which has more of an impact on our economy than diabetes, HIV and heart disease combined. He adds although it’s a very devastating and common problem, there’s very few resources for treating it in the public health care system.
