Free Tech Fair at Nelson Library

The Nelson Public Library is hosting a free Tech Fair this Saturday, October 20. It’s in conjunction with Kelowna-based Canada Learning Code. Chief librarian, Tracy Therrien, says it’s their first visit to the Kootenays and is a great opportunity to help kids explore different technologies.

“Touch and feel and play with a bunch of technology that they might not have the opportunity to. So it’s things like coding, and makey-makey, and some music and robots.”

As technology becomes more important in today’s world, Therrien feels this type learning is very important.

“It’s really just trying to get the word out how important learning another language like coding is important for kids, just because it is a language of the future [sic]. For kids to get a basic understanding of how computers work is really fundamental for them moving forward.”

It’s open to ages five and up and requires no prior knowledge or technical ability. It runs from 3:30-5:30PM at the library.

Canada Learning Code is a federally funded program. Their Code Mobiles travel across the country. They’ll also be teaching workshops for schools and community groups while in the Kootenays.
