$50K raised to help purchase lands around Cottonwood Lake Park

$50,000 has been raised to help purchase lands around Cottonwood Lake Park in Nelson. The Go Fund Me campaign took less than a month to reach its goal – 28 days to be exact. It was a happy day for Andrew McBurney, Chair of the newly formed Cottonwood Lake Preservation Society.

“That’s really significant isn’t it? It just shows what we all knew right from the get-go. This is a big deal.”

Donations came from all over the community. “Everybody got involved. People were sending in $10 if that’s all they had, which is fantastic and people were putting in $500. Businesses were putting in $300 up to $3000; just amazing generosity.”

The push continues and more funding is hoped to be secured through the Canada Nature Fund, McBurney explains is a federal grant.

“We did get the expression of interest filed, so that’s great and they gave us some food feedback. There’s another deadline on the 31 for information and of course the final deadline is March 31.”

Donations will continue to be accepted. There’s also a letter writing campaign planned at the Nelson Public Library on January 19 and February 9. Both run from 10:00AM to 2:00PM.
