New café series for parents launches this week

There’s a movement afoot aimed at bringing people together to take some time, sit down, and connect. Although it sounds simple, the art of connection is something of a lost one. Enter the U-Time Café series, an initiative of Nelson at its Best, where parents can come together to talk, learn, lead, earn and share while the kids play.

“We originally identified the need (for something like this) in the course of gathering everyday stories of lived experience of poverty,” says Valerie Warmington, primary researcher for the initiative. U-Time Cafés are barrier-free, welcoming parents from all walks of life.

Fifteen Cafés, which take place every Wednesday at 4:00 pm at Rosemont School in Nelson, from April 3 to June 19, offer parents a place to gather for conversation or activity in a casual, friendly environment. Comparing notes on parenting, sharing information about opportunities for themselves or their kids, learning something new—anything can happen at a U-Time Café. A free light dinner is provided (12 spots), and there is free child-minding on site (12 spots).

Parents are asked to access free tickets to the diverse café programming on Facebook (search for bestnelsoncafes) or call coordinator Carina Costom at 250-352-3806 ahead of time so organizers can plan for food and child-minding needs. Costom is also happy to answer any questions at that number.
