Nelson grass fire prompts warning

A small grass fire in Queen Elizabeth Park near the high school in Nelson on Wednesday sends a reminder that the dry season is near.
Assistant fire chief Mike Daloise tells My Nelson Now that units responded to a slow moving grass fire on Wednesday afternoon after witnesses called 911.
“It ended up covering a 30 by 30 meter area. There was a lot of dry material down at the ground level that the fire was moving through”, he says.

The fire is currently under investigation by Nelson police, and Mike Daloise says that at this time there are indications that someone started the fire, either intentionally or by negligence.
“It was not an accidental fire or someone throwing a cigarette butt out by the sounds of it”.

Although the fire was never threatening any nearby structures, and never had the potential to turn into something more hard to control, Nelson Fire and Rescue reminds the public about the risks of fires spreading and to have water buckets and other safety measures in place.
The department also offers free fire assessment for properties around Nelson.
