New course at Selkirk aims to help writers get their books finished

NELSON, B.C – A new second-year course in creative writing aims to help aspiring authors get their books finished.

The course is open for community learners as well as students, Selkirk College writes in a news release.
The course is led by writer and editor Leesa Dean.
“I wish a course like this had existed when I was finishing my first book,” says Dean, author of the critically acclaimed short story collection Waiting for the Cyclone.
“I started writing it in a Master’s program, but once that was finished, I found it difficult to continue. Without a community of peers, deadlines, and editors to read my work, I found about a thousand other things to do with my time.”
The course, called Creative Writing 200: Manuscript development, will consist of a large portion of online learning as well as bi-weekly sessions in Nelson and Castlegar where students can receive feedback and trade ideas with other aspiring writers.

Another course, running parallel during the fall semester is tailored for new writers, held on Wednesday evenings.
For more information about either course, please contact Leesa Dean at
