Climate strike to be held in Nelson Friday

NELSON, B.C. – A climate campaign from Sweden has reached the West Kootenays.

Local representatives for Fridays for Future, an initiative started by climate activist Greta Thunberg will be striking outside Nelson City hall with anyone wanting to join in on Friday.
The initiative will bring out students, striking from school as well as businesses who have agreed to join in on the action.

Wa-Ya Aeon, one of the organizers says it is about sounding the alarm.
“We want to wake people up”, he told My Nelson Now.
“The major ecological and environmental keystones of our planet are at risk, and if any of them collapse, human civilization will eventually go extinct, so we are waking people up to that fact”.

The climate strike, starting at 10:30 outside City Hall in Nelson will transform into a march down Baker street, that according to the organizers will also feature a samba band and other forms of noise-making to call attention on the climate issue.
The strike will also feature events later in the evening, such as a family friendly dance party. For more information, see Fridays for Future on Facebook.
