With the arrival of winter the RDCK is advising everyone to remain vigilant and take necessary care around ponds and lakes.
According to a media release, fluctuating temperatures and varying water depths can affect ice thickness at various times.
The RDCK asks you to educate yourself on when it is safe/walk or skate on a frozen lake, how to check the thickness of the ice and what to do if you fall through.
According to the release, it is important that residents understand the inherent dangers, and that no ice is completely safe.
The RDCK does not control or maintain any lakes or ponds for ice fishing and skating, but does facilitate a volunteer run outdoor rink that residents can take advantage of at Morning Mountain Regional Park.
The rink is free and open when winter conditions permit.
