Castlegar hotel tax ready for marketing efforts

Castlegar’s new hotel tax generated about $20,000 in the first quarter of this year.

The City initially estimated the Accommodation Tax would generate $50,000 annually so the figure is impressive.

The levy came into effect in January and sees a 2% fee for patrons of local hotel and motels – creating a fund for tourism and marketing programs.

Chamber Executive Director Tammy Verigin-Burk says 50% of the funds are going to marketing which will create initiatives they never had before.

She says a committee made up of accommodators and local politicians will look into how the money is spent.
