Kokanee crisis acknowledged:Outdoors club

A local official says it’s good news the province has now finally acknowledged there’s a kokanee fishery crisis in Kootenay Lake.

President of the West Arm Outdoors Club Gord Grunerud says the stock collapse is something locals had been complaining about.

But initially they weren’t getting the right government response.

Grunerud is speaking after this week’s public meeting in Balfour where ministry officials highlighted plans to get kokanee numbers back up.

This includes new fishing quotas targeting the Gerrard trout which is a predator.

Kokanee eggs will also be transplanted into the lake.
