GF councillor opposes tougher water restrictions

A Grand Forks city councillor doesn’t accept that the aquifer is being put under stress at the moment.

Julia Butler – who is anti water meters – is also against the city moving to stricter water restrictions with the very dry conditions and low river level.

She says she believes in conservation but the valley is not threatened.

Butler says industry and agriculture are the major users of water not residents.

City officials want to move to Stage 2 restrictions- which is watering just twice a week – but some fear their gardens would die if they have to move away from sprinkling on alternating days.

Butler says the city isn’t fully enforcing stage 1 restrictions so questions the merits of going any stricter.
