Queen City power restoration after storm

Nelson Hydro released the following update Tuesday morning:

Last night’s storm hit the City of Nelson and Proctor areas the hardest. There are many good sized trees lying on lines and in some cases have brought lines to the ground with broken conductor and poles.

Our staff, as well as that of our line contractors, worked through the night to repair damage and were able to start re-energizing main line power feeds around 1:45 am. They conducted patrols of the main lines to be assured there were no trees and lines that would turn into fire hazards upon power restoration. As of this morning most of our main power lines are re-energized except for the one feeding the North Shore from Coffee Creek.

There remain many areas of damage and our Power Line crews have extensive lists of areas that need repair. Many of our customers have power back as of this morning; we expect most of the remaining customers will be restored over the course of today and there likely will be few spots that take until tomorrow to have power restored.

We would like to thank the Fire, Police and public works people who helped us last night by responding to wire down concerns as well as dealing with the many other calls they were receiving.

A message for our customers:

  • If you are still without power – minimize the opening of fridges and freezers so as to preserve the cold as long as possible – some homes may not have power back till Wednesday.
  • For all customers stay away from fallen power lines – they may be energized or become re-energized.
  • We currently have a long list of damage areas. If your power is not on by the mid-afternoon today please call our Hydro Outage line (1-877-324-9376) and let us know so that we can ensure you are on the list of areas needing attention.
