Major aerial attack on Kokanee Creek fire

Wildfire crews working on the blaze north of Kokanee Creek Provincial Park on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake continue to give it the full treatment.

Fire Information Officer Jordan Turner says they’ve been hitting it hard from the air since it was spotted Friday morning.

Due to the proximity of  communities and the highway Turner says they want to get a quick handle on things.

A 20-person unit is working on the steep terrain in addition to the air attack.

The fire currently poses no threat to people or property.

It was measured at 1.5 hectares later Friday.

Smoke was making its way along the West Arm to Nelson earlier in the day but had eased by late morning. Turner says that could change though based on wind direction and fire behavior.
