Castlegar asked to butt out

Castlegar has been asked to join 40 B.C. communities who have implemented an outdoor smoking bylaw.

The Kootenay Smoke Free Coalition asked City council Monday night to develop legislation that would create smoke free areas in public spaces.

Trish Hill – who also works with Tobacco Reduction for Interior Health – says there are many benefits to such a bylaw.

Hill says a bylaw would also reduce the risk of wildfires caused by cigarette butts and decrease toxic litter.

Nakusp and Fruitvale are the only local communities who have an outdoor smoking bylaw.
