Short-term challenges for Nelson’s economy

Has the combination of wildfires and major road works made a big dent to the Nelson economy in recent weeks?

Executive Director of the Nelson and District Chamber Tom Thomson says some businesses have certainly been impacted by the Hall St project. And he adds the wildfire may have put some tourists off.

But there are positives too.

Thomson says numbers for his visitor information centre are down 14% since the Hall Street closures.

The chamber is considering taking the service mobile, to the local markets for example.
