Runaway car rolls down Nelson street

A runaway car in Nelson could have been far more serious than it was.

Nelson police report that last week an SUV rolled backwards out of a parking spot near the library on Stanley Street …with no one inside!

It rolled into a lane then crossed the sidewalk and smashed into the concrete wall at the police department’s parking lot.

And then it kept moving, rolling onto Stanley Street.

A passing motorist realised what was happening, parked his own vehicle quickly and jumped into the driverless SUV before pulling the handbrake.

A young adult driver has been ticketed for failing to properly secure her vehicle when parking.
