The wildfire near Rock Creek has spread rapidly and aggressively to 2,500 hectares and fire crews are focused more on property protection than containment at this stage.
Around 300 people from the area were evacuated Thursday night and are in three reception centres to the east and north.
Most were moved to Midway.
Fanny Bernard with the South East Fire Centre said the big blaze had been moving away from most homes even though lightning storms and wind this morning posed some challenges.
More personnel have been arriving on site.
She says the cause of the fire – which is believed to have started next to the highway Thursday afternoon – is under investigation.
Highway 3 and Highway 33 remain closed.
Access to the west is north via the Needles ferry which is now shuttling back and forth and not on the normal scheduled times.
