A crowd of around fifty gathered at Nelson’s Lakeside Park.
Among those remembering lost family members was Castlegar Fire Chief Gerry Rempel who is also part of the Metis community.
Aboriginal people are among the highest at risk for suicide and he says these days there is more effort to speak openly about the issue.
In Canada 11 people die from suicide each day.
The gathering in Nelson attached hand-written messages to kites to remember those who’ve died.
