Be prepared for an emergency:RDCK

Since last year’s hot, dry and dangerous summer local officials have been keen to remind us about planning for possible emergencies.

But events this week in Fort McMurray have highlighted the situation still further.

The RDCK says with flooding and wildfire a possibility in the coming weeks and months we should be giving thought to our state of readiness.

On Saturday in Nelson there will be a Disaster Day public event on hall street featuring 20 agencies offering advice and info.

Among the key messaging is making the area around your home FireSmart and having an emergency ” grab and go” kit with important items ready to in case you’re evacuated.

New Emergency Notification System

Meanwhile the RDCK is offering residents free access to a new text-based notification system that can be sent to a mobile or land line.
