Early melt could mean drought-like summer

An early snow melt in our region has alleviated potential flood risks… but we’ll have less flows this summer.

The current water supply forecast puts Kootenay Lake at around 13 % below normal for residual inflow .

BC Hydro’s Sally Macdonald says this is determined by snow pack levels.

Specifically, how much snow has melted and how much is left.

She says this also impacted Kootenay Lake levels as it peaked late last week, which is earlier than in the past.
