BC Chamber wants to replace PST

BC’s Chamber Of Commerce wants the provincial sales tax replaced with a new value-added-tax, or VAT.

The aim is to get rid of the bureaucratic PST that sees the tax charged at every layer of the good or service.

VAT is charged only when the final sale is made.

Tom Thomson with the Nelson Chamber says VAT can be a made-in-BC solution, unlike the doomed harmonized sales tax five years ago that did not involve public consultation.

Thomson says a BC VAT would make things easier for businesses and the public could help customize what things should be exempt like green products such as bicycles or exercise equipment.
