Province throws funding lifeline to rural schools

It appears a provincial funding life-line has been thrown to Winlaw Elementary School.

Premier Christy Clark has announced a Rural Education Enhancement Fund to help keep rural schools open.

The province says Winlaw Elementary would qualify for the money.

Education Minister Mike Bernier says the fund is about keeping specific grades local and to preserve schools that are key to a community.

He says the funding would be ongoing not a one-off.

Yahk Elementary near Creston also qualifies but there’s no mention of Jewett Elementary in the Lardeau Valley which is also threatened with closure.

The government has also announced a rural education strategy to review rural school district budgets.
