Police chief disappointed with panhandling bylaw postponement

Nelson city council’s decision to postpone a panhandling by-law won’t make life any easier for police.

This from Chief Paul Burkart who says he’s disappointed the by-law stalled before final adoption.

Burkart says it would have been an extra tool to deal with the frequent complaints they receive.

Although it wouldn’t have banned panhandling outright it would have further regulated it.

But council opted to delay adoption until at least September 2017 in hopes an outreach worker can be hired.
