Downed power lines causes outage

It’s not known what downed two sets of power lines in Nelson on Friday afternoon.

Nelson Fire Rescue says the first call came from the corner of Victoria and Hall streets at about 1:25 p.m. They found two lines down and with the help of police sealed off the area.

Soon after they found another location on Gyro Park Road also had lines down.

Hydro crews had to isolate the area to complete the line repairs before they could re-energize, assistant fire chief Mike Daloise said in a news release.

“Unfortunately this took a bit of time due to the damage done to the lines and the multiple locations,” he said

Nelson Hydro is investigating what caused the damage.

“It is unclear what caused the damage and Nelson Hydro crews are investigating,” Daloise said. No injuries were reported, “thanks largely in part to the quick response by Nelson Hydro and the Nelson Police Department. We would also like to thank the many people inconvenienced by the road and sidewalk closures and their understanding as we tried to keep everyone safe.”

Daloise said if you see downed lines, stay at least 10 meters away and call 911.
