French immersion numbers rise in local schools

Enrollment in French immersion programs in the Kootenay-Columbia school district is at a record high.

According to Canadian Parents for French, 265 students are signed up this year compared to 212 last year.

In the Kootenay Lake district, 282 students are enrolled —  up from 270 last year but shy of the record of 300 in 2007-08.

Province-wide over 52,000 students were in French immersion last year —  9.5 per cent of the total student body.
