Nelson native joins police department

The Nelson Police Department has recruited a local as its newest constable.

Lauren Mirva was sworn in Thursday. She’s one of three female officers in the department.

Mirva graduated from L.V. Rogers Secondary, where she was awarded the top female athlete award for her graduating year.

She has a degree in criminology from Mount Royal University and has worked as a security officer and seasonal forest firefighter.

She follows a family tradition in law enforcement as her father is a retired RCMP officer who is presently serving as a deputy sheriff in Nelson and her sister is a deputy sheriff in Alberta.

She will begin training on Sept. 19 at the Justice Institute of BC.
