How should a city decide whether a church deserves a permissive tax exemption?

It’s a question Nelson council has spent a lot of time discussing lately.

Councillor Michael Dailly says it’s been a struggle.

Councillor Robin Cherbo feels they’re splitting hairs over a modest amount of money.

The debate is partly because the total exemptions requested are more than the limit set out in policy.

While churches get statutory exemptions for their buildings, it’s up to council to waive taxes on their properties.
