Wreck of steam tug Kaslo discovered

Divers have discovered the remains of the steam tug Kaslo in the West Arm of Kootenay Lake.

John Pollock with the Underwater Archaeological Society of BC and Institute for Nautical Archaeology says the ship, built in 1892, lies in 130 feet of water off the Nelson airport.

The Kaslo burned in 1900. Pollock says its engines were moved to the tug Proctor, and the hull deliberately sunk.

Divers Bill Meekel of Kamloops and Brian Nadwidny of Edmonton went down to have a look.

Pollock says they also visited a barge loaded with what they believe is uncut marble.

The team also included Kathleen McGuiness of Nelson and John and Cathy McCuaig of Edmonton.
