Nelson reduces maximum garbage bag weight

Nelson is reducing the maximum allowable weight for garbage and recycling bags left out for pickup.

It’s in the wake of 13 injuries to city garbage collectors since 2012, mostly the result of heavy lifting.

Mayor Deb Kozak says the limit will now be 44 pounds (20 kg) per bag instead of 50 (23 kg).

Overweight bags will have stickers put on them explaining why they weren’t picked up.

The city will launch an education campaign to help get the word out.
