The Regional District of Central Kootenay has unanimously passed a motion asking BC Timber Sales to back off from the Ymir watershed.
The government plans to open the community’s watershed up for logging.
But area director Hans Cunningham agrees with residents who find that unacceptable.
Cunningham says BC Timber Sales does appear willing to negotiate on some points.
But he’s still concerned the work could affect already precarious stream flows.
He says the area hasn’t seen any logging since the 1950s.
Silverton director Leah Main says she strongly supported the motion.
About 50 people showed up at a community meeting this week.
