Scammer poses as Nelson police

Nelson police say if you get a call from someone claiming to represent them seeking donations for local kids, it’s a scam.

This morning, a man with a blocked call ID phoned a city resident and said he represented the Nelson Police Department. He said he was doing a Canada-wide call out to raise money for the kids in Nelson, and seeking donations of $200 to $500.

The would-be victim, after speaking with the caller for five minutes, realized it was a scam and didn’t give any money.

“The Nelson Police Department would like to make people aware of this new fraud and to always be diligent when receiving unsolicited calls such as this,” Cst. Alain Therrien siad in a news release. “Fraudsters are becoming more and more creative in coming up with new scams to try and get money. ”

If you do receive such a call, notify the Nelson Police Department or Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
