Former officer’s legal fees revealed

Former Nelson police Cst. Drew Turner’s legal fees in an assault trial were $38,115, the police board has revealed.

That’s the amount Turner paid to lawyer John Green for services between August 2014 and his sentencing in October 2015.

However, it remains unclear how much city taxpayers are on the hook for.

In May, the police board reached a settlement with Turner to pay a portion of the fees, but they say the terms of the agreement mean they can’t disclose the amount.

“The board is satisfied that the amount reimbursed by Mr. Turner was reasonable in light of the provisions of the collective agreement between the Nelson Police Board and the Nelson Police Association,” the board said in a statement released today.

Turner was convicted of punching a woman while responding to a complaint off duty and sentenced to house arrest. He subsequently resigned from the department.
