Salmon to return to Upper Columbia in 2018

The Okanagan Nation Alliance is preparing for a pilot project to return salmon to the Upper Columbia River.

Biologist Michael Zimmer says they’re helping the Colville Confederated Tribes with the experiment.

It will see adult chinook moved above the Grand Coulee dam in Washington state next year.

Zimmer says technology exists to help salmon navigate various river barriers and ultimately the goal is a self-sustaining run.

He points to the successful restoration of sockeye stocks on the Okanagan River.
