Over 80 people participated in a candlelight vigil in Nelson this afternoon as part of the National Day of Remembrance.
City councillor Valerie Warmington explained it was about taking action on violence against women.
RCMP Cst. Sophie McLean read the names of the 14 women murdered in Montreal on this day in 1989.
Roses were laid in their memory in a basket on the cenotaph by 14 prominent men, including the police chief, fire chief, and city manager, who have pledged personal action.
Shoes were also placed on the cenotaph to mark women who have suffered violence.
The crowd was told that half of all women in Canada have experienced sexual or physical violence.
