Mining exploration worries Blewett water group

Some Blewett residents are concerned about drilling for minerals in their watershed.

TerraLogic Exploration has been drilling in the Sandy Creek area area.

But Case Grypma, who chairs the Georama Road water users group, says they worry about the effects of industrial activity.

Grypma says they met last week with the company and government officials who issued the mining permit and did a site tour.

They feel Terralogic isn’t complying with certain aspects of its permit, but their request for a stop work order was turned down.

The company hasn’t returned our calls this week, but the government says the company has offered to conduct water monitoring for quality and quantity.

Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall, who is BC’s mines minister, declined an interview request but provided a prepared statement.

“I am following this matter closely and am confident the parties involved can address and resolve any concerns,” she said.

“It’s also important to understand that decisions on notice of work applications are made by statutory decision-makers in the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources – completely independent of any political influence.”

The Georama Road water system serves 12 homeowners as well as Georama Growers, and Kootenay Cove Trailer Park with 22 homes. Grypma estimates 80 people are on the system.

There are also two other community water systems in the area and a dozen homes on private systems.
